Troy Kingi reflects on Matariki milestones and whānau as 10-album journey nears end

AUCKLAND — For multi-award-winning artist Troy Kingi, this year’s Matariki celebrations mark a significant moment of reflection as he nears the completion of one of the most ambitious creative undertakings in New Zealand music. Speaking with RNZ on 10 July 2026, Kingi shared how the Māori New Year has become a vital time to honour those who have passed and to cherish those still here. Nearly 20 years ago, Kingi conceived a plan to release 10 albums across 10 different genres in 10 years. Now, with nine albums complete, he is preparing to record the final installment at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London next month. While the artist admitted to RNZ that he has rarely slowed down to appreciate the achievement, the nearing finish line represents a transition toward a new chapter. Following his personal tikanga for Matariki, Kingi and his whānau take time to share stories of loved ones. He noted the importance of visiting elders, such as his grandmother, while they are still here rather than waiting for them to pass. This sense of lineage is also moving into his professional life; on Friday night, Kingi is set to perform at Ngā Reo o te Rangi alongside two of his daughters, aged 18 and 12. Kingi told RNZ that performing with his children feels like a full-circle moment for his career. As he prepares to retire the 'Troy Kingi' artist persona after the tenth album, he views the next generation as the keepers of the future. By sharing the stage with his daughters, he signaled a passing of the torch, stating that the legacy is being left in good hands.
