Kura Forrester and Kiwi Stars Share Top Travel Picks as 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards Begin

Aotearoa’s preferred getaway spots are in the spotlight as the New Zealand Herald Travel Readers’ Choice Awards 2026, presented by Southern Cross Travel Insurance, officially get underway. To mark the launch of the voting period, prominent New Zealand figures, including comedian and actor Kura Forrester, have shared their personal highlights of both domestic and international travel. Speaking to the Herald, Forrester identified Ōhope Beach as her premier New Zealand holiday destination. She noted that the location is not only her favourite place to swim but also holds significant personal importance as it is where a many of her family members currently live. Her international preference was Cardiff, Wales, driven by a desire to explore the region’s rich history and frequent local pubs with her best friend, who relocated there a year ago. Other notable contributors included comedian Tom Sainsbury, who recommended Rakiura Stewart Island for its nature and local characters, and Samoa for international relaxation. Former All Black Mills Muliaina and musician Reb Fountain are also among the stars participating in the campaign to inspire New Zealanders to cast their votes. The awards invite the public to nominate their favourite experiences and locations through a survey. Participants before the deadline on Friday, 31 July, enter a draw for a 12-day trip to Sri Lanka for two, valued at $10,000. Forrester, who is currently hosting Appropriation Nation on TVNZ+ and appearing in the second season of Bryn and Kura’s Single Club on The Spinoff, also noted that Bali and Japan are at the top of her future travel bucket list, primarily for the culinary experiences they offer. The winners of the 2026 awards will be revealed on Tuesday, 11 August.
