Ngāi Tahu Farming Named Preferred Operator for Iconic Molesworth Station Lease

A new chapter is beginning for one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes as Ngāi Tahu Farming has been selected as the preferred operator to negotiate the long-term lease of Molesworth Station. Waatea News reports that the Department of Conservation (DOC), which manages the Crown-owned station, confirmed the selection on Sunday, 2 August 2026, following a competitive procurement process. Located between Marlborough and Canterbury, Molesworth Station spans approximately 180,000 hectares, making it the largest working farm in the country. The station is renowned for its sheep and beef operations, alongside its significant ecological, cultural, and recreational values. According to DOC, the selection was based on the operator's ability to balance commercial performance with environmental stewardship. The department expects the leaseholder to maintain a viable pastoral enterprise while protecting the station’s unique braided river systems and native flora. For Ngāi Tahu Farming, the commercial arm of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, this opportunity aligns with their existing portfolio of sheep, beef, and dairy properties across Te Waipounamu. The organisation operates under a philosophy of kaitiakitanga, focusing on intergenerational stewardship and ensuring the whenua remains productive and healthy for future generations. The station holds deep cultural significance within the Ngāi Tahu takiwā, making this move a significant milestone for iwi agribusiness. Federated Farmers has welcomed the announcement, stating that the decision provides much-needed certainty for the pastoral property. The farming organisation noted that Molesworth has long proved that productive agriculture and conservation can coexist. Negotiations will now proceed to finalise the terms of the lease, ensuring the station continues to contribute to the regional economy while maintaining public access and protecting its high-country heritage.
