Taranaki Iwi Launch 'The Landline' Initiative to Mobilise Māori Voters

A significant new initiative led by the eight iwi of Taranaki aims to mobilise Māori voters ahead of the upcoming national general election. Operating under the collective body Te Tōpuni Ngārahu, the campaign—titled 'The Landline'—serves as a targeted call to action for local whānau to ensure they are registered and prepared to cast their ballots. As reported by Waatea News, the launch represents a unified and proactive effort by Taranaki leadership to ensure Māori voices are represented at the polls through high levels of iwi registration. Wharehoka Wano, the Pouwhakarae (Chairperson) of Te Tōpuni Ngārahu, is leading the call for increased participation, noting the importance of connecting with whānau across the rohe and the wider district. Mr Wano explained that the campaign’s unique name serves as a metaphor for deep-rooted connection. While acknowledging that younger generations might not be familiar with the physical technology of a landline telephone, he stated that the essence of the kaupapa is about extending the 'aka kūmara'—the traditional grapevine or vine of the kūmara. By framing the project around this concept of shared connection or 'aka', organisers hope to reach as many families as possible. The drive seeks to bridge the gap between different generations of voters and make the electoral process more accessible and relevant to the community.
