Te Pāti Māori unveils multi-billion dollar Kai Sovereignty plan for Election 2026

Te Pāti Māori has launched a major Kai Sovereignty policy as part of its Election 2026 platform, aimed at transitioning whānau from food dependency to self-sufficiency. As reported by Waatea News on 21 September 2026, the policy seeks to address the disparity between New Zealand’s high food export rates—including 95 percent of milk and 80 percent of meat—and the rising cost of basic groceries for local households. At the heart of the proposal is a multi-million dollar investment strategy to stimulate Māori food production. The party is pledging a $100 million Community Kai Fund to support home gardens, marae māra kai, and community-led farms. This is paired with an additional $100 million agricultural innovation fund designed to bolster small Māori farms, regenerative organic agriculture, and garden-to-market initiatives. To address market concentration, Te Pāti Māori proposes $100 million in seed funding for Māori collectives to establish their own supermarket chains. The plan includes securing access to Crown or council-owned land for these stores and enhancing protections for whānau selling homegrown or roadside kai. The party also plans to establish an independent Māori Kai Sovereignty Board with statutory powers to oversee these developments and protect Indigenous plant intellectual property. The most significant financial component is a proposed $2.8 billion Income Tax Kai Credit. Targeted at those earning $60,000 or less, the credit would provide the equivalent of eight weeks of food support annually. According to the party’s estimates, approximately three million people would qualify for this relief. The policy also includes scholarships for rangatahi entering food sciences and marine biology, further aligning food security with long-term economic rangatiratanga.
