Tāmaki Makaurau Libraries to Host Over 70 Free Events for Adult Learners’ Week

Aucklanders are being invited to rediscover their passions and strengthen cultural connections as more than 70 free events prepare to launch across Tāmaki Makaurau for Adult Learners’ Week He Tangata Mātauranga. Running from 7 to 13 September, the initiative will transform 23 Auckland Council libraries into community learning hubs, offering everything from harakeke raranga (weaving) and language learning to business skills and stop-motion storytelling. Delivered through a partnership between Auckland Council and Adult and Community Education (ACE) Aotearoa, the programme marks the 25th anniversary of the event in New Zealand. The theme for this year, “Finding Our Voice — Ko tōku reo, ko tōku ohooho!”, focuses on how education supports self-determination and creativity. For Māori participants, the week provides specific opportunities to engage with traditional knowledge and mātauranga through practical workshops. Councillor Julie Fairey, chair of the Community Committee, noted that the diverse range of events reflects the unique cultures and experiences found within the region. The programme is supported by the Council’s Whānau Learning team, which works to remove barriers to literacy and education. By offering these classes for free, organizers hope to demonstrate that learning is a lifelong journey that extends well beyond formal schooling. Organisers highlight that adult education offers benefits beyond employment, such as fostering social connection and enhancing wellbeing. Whether through rediscovering an old hobby or developing digital skills, the initiative aims to provide accessible pathways for all residents. The 2026 programme coincides with the 40th international anniversary of Adult Learners’ Week, cementing the importance of community-led education in Aotearoa.
