Powerhouse front-rower Payne Haas has officially closed the door on a potential return to the Australian national side, declaring his total commitment to Toa Samoa for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup. Speaking on Monday, 13 July 2026, the Brisbane Broncos star addressed reports suggesting he might switch his allegiance back to the Kangaroos for the tournament, which is set to be co-hosted by Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea later this year. Haas, who qualifies for Samoa through his mother, Joan Haas, made the move to represent his heritage during last year's Pacific Championships after previously earning four Test caps for Australia. The 26-year-old prop told ABC News that there was "no way in hell" he would backflip on his decision, citing a deep-seated desire to honor his mother and grandparents through the Samoan jersey. He emphasized that as a man of his word, his loyalty remains firmly with the Pacific nation. Samoa enters the 2026 tournament with high expectations after finishing as runners-up to Australia in the 2022 final. Haas believes the current squad, which features elite talent such as Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, Stephen Crichton, and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, has a "great chance" to go one step further and claim the world title.
