First Nations Talent Dominates 2026 Logie Award Nominations

A new wave of First Nations talent is being celebrated on the world stage following the announcement of the 2026 Logie Award nominations on Monday, 22 June 2026. Leading the surge are Noongar Boodjar actress Lila McGuire and 10-year-old Yamatji/Noongar actress Eloise Hart, who both portrayed legendary tennis champion Evonne Goolagong Cawley in the ABC series Goolagong. The three-part drama has secured a nomination for Best Miniseries/Telemovie. McGuire, 29, expressed deep emotion at the news, telling ABC that being nominated is a dream she has held since childhood. She is a contender for the Silver Logie for Best Lead Actress in a Drama and the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent. Joining her in the latter category are Hart and Bundjalung and Lamalama actor Tamala. McGuire noted that seeing so many Indigenous performers excelling is a gift for the younger generation, reflecting a shift in the industry that her ancestors once dreamed of. The nominations show a significant presence of Indigenous talent across various categories. Mystery Road: Origin, which featured an all-Blak writing team, earned five nominations including Best Drama Program. The show’s star, Mark Coles Smith, is nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Drama alongside fellow First Nations actors Hunter Page-Lochard and Rob Collins, making up half of the nominees in that category. Young actress Eloise Hart, who also appeared in Mystery Road: Origin, stated that the characters she plays represent the lived experiences of many Indigenous families and celebrate icons like Goolagong Cawley. Other notable nods include Clarence Ryan and Thomas Weatherall, who are both finalists for Best Supporting Actor. For McGuire, the high level of representation is a validating moment for the industry, showcasing the hard work and diverse talent currently on Australian screens.
