New Zealand and India Target Bilateral Series to Honour Century of Sporting Connections

Auckland recently hosted a celebration of international sporting excellence as India’s women’s hockey team secured the 2026 FIH Nations Cup title. Speaking on the sidelines of the final on Sunday, Hockey New Zealand chief executive Michelle Hollands shared ambitious plans to further strengthen the deep-rooted ties between the two nations through a bilateral series scheduled for November 2026. The proposed matches aim to commemorate a century of sporting relations. Hollands noted that June 26 marks exactly 100 years since the first international hockey match between India and New Zealand took place. The 1926 tour saw the Indian Army hockey team engage in a historic three-month visit to New Zealand, playing 21 matches across the country. That original squad featured the legendary Dhyan Chand, who helped steer India toward three consecutive Olympic gold medals. The current sporting landscape remains vibrant, following India’s 2-0 victory over the Black Sticks in Auckland. Despite New Zealand’s persistent offensive pressure in the final quarter, Indian defender Navneet Kaur and midfielder Sunelita Toppo’s early goals, alongside a steadfast defence, earned the visitors promotion to the Hockey Pro League and a qualification spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Midfielder Lalremsiami Hmarzote was recognised sebagai player of the match for her clinical performance. Indian High Commissioner Muanpuii Saiawi expressed her delight at the ongoing unity between the two nations. This partnership is further bolstered by a 2025 sports memorandum of cooperation, which focuses on joint training camps, coaching exchanges, and sports science. Beyond hockey, the centenary celebrations will extend to a historic cricket tour featuring 12 matches between the Indian men's team and the Black Caps in October and November, marking a new chapter in a century of high-performance collaboration.
