Koroneihana Celebrations Foster Dialogue on Treaty Partnership at Tūrangawaewae Marae

NGĀRUAWĀHIA — Tūrangawaewae Marae became the focal point for national dialogue on Friday, 4 September 2026, as leaders gathered to pay their respects to the Māori monarch, Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po, during the annual Koroneihana celebrations. The event served as a significant platform for iwi leaders to share their visions for Aotearoa New Zealand's constitutional future directly with representatives from across the political spectrum. Speaking from the pae, Ngāi Tahu leader Justin Tipa called for elevated political discourse, urging parties to avoid "lazy thinking" on matters of constitutional significance. He challenged both the centre-right and centre-left to move beyond short-term political cycles and instead focus on enduring solutions that respect the spirit of partnership. As reported by RNZ, Tipa emphasized that Treaty issues should be treated with the weight they deserve rather than being dismissed through political rhetoric. Kiingitanga spokesperson Rahui Papa highlighted the gathering as a "golden opportunity" for lawmakers to listen to the aspirations of Māori. While acknowledging recent progress in Waikato regarding housing developments and infrastructure like the Ruakura project and local highways, Papa maintained that protecting the integrity of existing Treaty settlements remains a top priority. He noted that the upcoming election would be instrumental in shaping the nation as it approaches the 200th anniversary of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 2040. The celebrations saw attendance from a wide range of political figures, including representatives from National, ACT, New Zealand First, Labour, the Greens, and Te Pāti Māori. Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rāwiri Waititi used the occasion to discuss his party's advocacy for constitutional reform, while Labour leader Chris Hipkins reiterated his focus on embedding partnerships at all levels of government.
