Tāmaki Makaurau to Host Global Education Convention Amid Calls for Stable Curriculum Reform

Tāmaki Makaurau is set to welcome more than 1,250 school principals from Aotearoa and around the globe next week for the International Confederation of Principals 2026 Convention. According to a report by Waatea News, the gathering at the New Zealand International Convention Centre comes at a pivotal time as education leaders navigate significant curriculum reforms and the growing influence of artificial intelligence in the classroom. New Zealand Principals’ Federation (NZPF) President Jason Miles highlighted the pressures facing school leaders, noting that the volume and pace of government-led changes have become a defining debate of the year. To ensure long-term stability for learners, the NZPF is advocating for the establishment of an independent Curriculum and Assessment Council for Aotearoa New Zealand. This proposed body would aim to protect schools from shifting political priorities and provide a more consistent national approach to schooling that lasts beyond electoral cycles. The convention will also address the critical role of Māori participation in education policy. Te Akatea New Zealand Māori Principals’ Association has previously emphasised the importance of meaningful engagement regarding Te Tiriti o Waitangi, te reo Māori, and mātauranga Māori. As the Government rewrites the national curriculum, Māori education leaders are seeking to ensure that Māori identity and history are authentically reflected and that kura, iwi, and whānau have a decisive voice in shaping the system. In addition to policy discussions, delegates will explore the impacts of generative AI on education. With the Education Review Office recently calling for a national framework, principals are working to protect Māori data and mātauranga Māori as these technologies become embedded in schools. The convention follows recent collective agreements that have recognised the expanding complexities of school leadership through salary increases and new allowances for principal mentors.
