Entries Open for 2027 Ahuwhenua Trophy as Māori Dairy Sector Reaches $11 Billion Valuation

The search for Aotearoa New Zealand’s top Māori dairy farming operations has officially commenced as entries open for the 2027 Ahuwhenua Trophy – Excellence in Māori Farming and the Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer Award. The Māori dairy asset base is now valued at over $11 billion, representing a monumental shift for the industry as the underlying value of these assets has more than doubled since 2018. Ahuwhenua Trophy Chair Nukuhia Hadfield noted that the competition highlights Māori farmers operating at the top tier of agribusiness, focusing on trusts, incorporations, and individuals who demonstrate excellence in innovation, productivity, and governance. The competition operates on a three-year rotation between dairy, sheep and beef, and horticulture, carrying a legacy established nearly a century ago by Tā Apirana Ngata and Lord Bledisloe. While the original goal was to encourage Māori land development, the modern kaupapa emphasizes sophisticated intergenerational planning, environmental responsibility, and balancing commercial success with Māori values. Rito Tapuke, the Pou Māori Judge for the Ahuwhenua Trophy, joined Radio Waatea to encourage dairy farmers and rangatahi across the motu to put themselves forward. Tapuke emphasized that finalists often serve as vital case studies for other whānau and incorporations, helping to strengthen the wider Māori economy by sharing best practices and successful models of Māori farming. DairyNZ Chair Tracy Brown, who also serves on the Ahuwhenua Management Committee, highlighted that Māori dairy farmers remain significant contributors to the wider industry, which generated over $60 billion in export revenue last financial year. Alongside the main trophy, the Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer Award seeks to identify the next generation of leadership to address workforce shortages and adapt to changing technologies. Past dairy winners, including Ben Purua in 2024 and Quinn Morgan in 2021, have set a high standard for emerging talent. The category focuses on practical skills and leadership, offering exposure to careers in environmental management, science, technology, and finance.
