Aotea Energy launches smart battery system to slash household power costs

Aotea Energy is launching a new home battery system in Auckland and Christchurch this week, aiming to disrupt the New Zealand electricity market. As reported by RNZ on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, the AE-1 battery allows households to purchase and store electricity when wholesale prices are at their lowest. The technology is designed to grant consumers direct access to wholesale spot prices for a $20 monthly subscription, passing through power and network charges at cost. Aotea Energy founder Tama Toki told RNZ that the system utilizes intelligent software to anticipate market fluctuations. The battery includes a computer equipped with reactive and proactive back-end policies that respond to signals from the generation and retail sectors. According to Toki, this allows the system to identify price spikes and falls, enabling it to "buy those cheap electrons" efficiently. While the hardware starts at $10,500 plus installation, the company targets households with higher energy usage to ensure the investment is cost-effective. Trials conducted by the company over the last year indicate significant savings. Aotea Energy reports that its current fleet has achieved an average cost of 6 cents per kilowatt hour. This equates to approximately $2,700 in annual savings for the average household, with a projected payback period of three to six years. The system can also be integrated with rooftop solar panels to export energy back to the grid during price peaks. The venture has gained significant backing from prominent New Zealand investors, including Sir Stephen Tindall’s K1W1 fund and Vend founder Vaughan Fergusson. Former Tesla Energy operator Antoine Riboulon has also joined the team as chief operating officer. Toki noted that Aotea Energy maintains proprietary ownership of the hardware, with the batteries being assembled locally in New Zealand. To manage the risks associated with volatile wholesale prices, the company stress-tests consumption profiles for new customers against historical market spikes to ensure long-term affordability.
