Te Pāti Māori outlines Te Tiriti bottom lines for post-election negotiations

Te Pāti Māori has signaled its strategic priorities ahead of the 2026 election, establishing the protection of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and constitutional transformation as a fundamental 'bottom line' for any future government negotiations. According to reporting from Waatea News on 5 September 2026, the party’s platform aims to secure a pathway toward a new constitutional framework by the year 2040, marking the bicentenary of the signing of Te Tiriti. A central component of this policy includes the establishment of a $220 million Mātike Mai Fund over four years. This fund is intended to support Māori-led initiatives focused on constitutional change. The party’s proposal seeks to move beyond symbolic gestures, advocating for legally enforceable Crown obligations and an independent mechanism specifically designed to address and respond to serious breaches of Te Tiriti by the Crown. Writing for Waatea News, Matthew Tukaki noted that the party is also calling for Waitangi Tribunal recommendations to become binding. This policy shift would represent a significant change in the redistribution of constitutional power, requiring potential coalition partners like Labour or the Greens to engage with specific, legally anchored demands rather than broad aspirations.
