WORD Christchurch Festival Highlights Whānau-Friendly Zinefest in Upcoming 2026 Programme

The line-up for the 2026 WORD Christchurch Festival has been officially announced, promising a week of bold ideas and compelling stories in Ōtautahi. Speaking on the RNZ programme Nights on Wednesday 15 July 2026, Executive Director Steph Walker shared insights into the event, which is scheduled to run from 1 September to 6 September 2026. A central highlight of the newly released programme is Zinefest, described as a whānau-friendly day dedicated to the celebration of zine culture, small press, and self-publishing. The event aims to foster creative expression across the community in Ōtautahi and the wider Aotearoa region, forming part of a diverse schedule that includes memorable performances and appearances by well-known figures. In addition to the literature and arts focus, the evening's broadcast addressed local biosecurity updates. Natalie Forsdick, President of Birds New Zealand, joined the programme to discuss the detection of bird flu on New Zealand shores. This follows confirmation from Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard that a brown skua found on Petone Beach in Wellington tested positive for the virus. The festival's return coincides with several international artistic visits to Aotearoa. This includes Danish-born singer-songwriter Agnes Obel, who is scheduled to perform at Auckland’s Te Paepae Theatre in September as part of her first return to the country since 2022. The WORD Christchurch Festival continues to serve as a platform for both local creative talent and international dialogue within the arts sector.
