The iconic anthem 'Poi E' has claimed the top position in RNZ’s search for the country’s favourite songs. The rankings were determined by a public vote featuring a longlist of over 200 tracks. More than 18,000 votes were cast by New Zealanders, who were each permitted to choose up to five songs. 'Poi E' led both the dedicated Top 20 Waiata Māori list and the broader top 100 overall countdown, reinforcing its status as what commentators describe as a once-in-a-generation waiata. Notable successes in the countdown included the Aotearoa Songbook, a digital initiative led by Hana Mereraiha to revitalise classic Māori compositions, which secured four spots in the top 20. Singer-songwriter Marlon Williams followed closely with three entries, including the 2025 track 'Whakameatia Mai,' which voters praised for its ability to lift the spirits and warm the heart. Other prominent artists featured in the rankings include Stan Walker, whose songs 'Māori Ki Te Ao' and 'Aotearoa' both placed, and the metal band Alien Weaponry with 'Kai Tangata.' The 20th spot was held by 'Ka Mānu,' a 2019 collaboration led by Rob Ruha and featuring artists such as Ria Hall and Troy Kingi. Inspired by the protests at Ihumātao and Hawaii’s Mauna Kea, the song remains a powerful symbol of Indigenous solidarity.
