Green Party MP Teanau Tuiono Calls for Intergenerational Leadership at Koroneihana 2026

Speaking following the Koroneihana 2026 celebrations at Tūrangawaewae, Green Party MP Teanau Tuiono has called for a shift in political leadership to prioritise the long-term health of the environment and future generations. He emphasised that environmental protection should not be viewed as a portfolio competing with economic interests but as a fundamental responsibility to mokopuna. For Māori, he noted that the health of the community is intrinsically tied to the health of te taiao, requiring a leadership style that protects the whenua for those to come. Beyond Aotearoa, Tuiono highlighted growing concerns within the Pacific Islands Forum regarding geopolitical tensions. He addressed the impact of recent missile activity in the region, advocating for Pacific nations to maintain their autonomy. He argued that Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa should be respected as a home built on whakapapa rather than a strategic arena for larger global powers. Ultimately, Tuiono is calling for Aotearoa to listen more closely to Pacific voices. He believes that decisions regarding climate change, security, and international conflict must be viewed through a lens that protects the most vulnerable communities and preserves the natural world for the future.
