Celestine Stadnick seeks South Dakota Senate seat to advocate for Lakota community

On the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Oglala Lakota educator Celestine Stadnick has announced her candidacy for the South Dakota State Senate District 27. The move follows her prominent role in local relief efforts earlier this year. As reported by ICT on 18 September 2026, Stadnick's decision to enter politics was sparked by a devastating apartment fire on 21 January 2026, which displaced 63 residents in Kyle, South Dakota. Stadnick, a middle school principal at Little Wound School, gained community recognition for her rapid response to the disaster, gathering donations and providing essential supplies to victims. This spirit of service now drives her bid for the state capital in Pierre, where she aims to represent the Democratic ticket in the 3 November 2026 general election. She faces Republican Anthony Kathol and Independent Peri Pourier, an Oglala Lakota woman who currently serves in the South Dakota House of Representatives. With a background that includes experience in both Swedish and Lakota educational systems, Stadnick previously taught at the Lakota Waldorf School, an institution founded by her parents and Lakota elders in 1994. She told ICT that her goal is to act as a cultural and political translator, bringing together legislators with differing views to focus on shared goals. Stadnick stated that her commitment to the role stems from her upbringing and a desire to preserve the Lakota language and way of life. The seat is currently held by State Senator Red Dawn Foster, who will vacate the position this year after reaching the eight-year term limit. Stadnick emphasized that her approach to leadership is rooted in service rather than titles, focusing on Lakota spiritual laws such as respect and compassion. She believes her ability to navigate diverse cultural and political worlds will help build effective coalitions in the state legislature.
