Te Tai Hauāuru Candidates Outline Vision for Māori Representation in Political Debate

On Monday, August 24, 2026, the three candidates vying for the Te Tai Hauāuru seat shared their visions for the west North Island electorate in a political debate hosted by Scotty Morrison on TVNZ’s Marae program. The discussion featured incumbent MP and Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, Labour candidate Te Pūoho Kātene, and National candidate Coral Raukawa. The Te Tai Hauāuru electorate covers a vast geographic area, stretching from Kāwhia in the Waikato down to Porirua in the Wellington region, including major centres such as New Plymouth, Whanganui, and Palmerston North. While Te Pāti Māori holds the electorate seat, the 2023 results showed a diverse political landscape, with Labour receiving 41% of the party vote.
