New Zealand Indigenous Fashion Symposium Marks Landmark Expansion at Fashion Week

Auckland recently served as a vibrant hub for global Indigenous creativity during New Zealand Fashion Week 2026, headlined by the inaugural New Zealand Indigenous Fashion Symposium. Led by designer Kiri Nathan, the event marked a significant shift for the national fashion schedule, moving beyond traditional trade shows toward a more inclusive exchange of ideas and culture. The symposium, which took place on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, featured panel discussions focused on critical industry topics including trade, growth, and intellectual property protections for Indigenous creators. The event was described by The Spinoff’s Emma Gleason as a landmark addition to the week, reflecting a growing global mindset within the local industry. Running alongside the symposium, the Kāhui Collective group show—also helmed by Nathan—showcased the works of designers from Taiwan, Alaska, and Fiji. The collective’s presence extended beyond the runway with a retail component available at The Cloud and Te Pā, Nathan’s fashion hub located in Glen Innes. Among the highlights was the work of Taiwanese designer Yuma Taru, illustrating the event's commitment to international Indigenous collaboration. The broader Fashion Week schedule also celebrated significant milestones for Pacific design. The Pacific Fusion group show, led by Nora Swann, marked its 10th anniversary this year. The opening night event, The Art of Style, further honoured creative excellence with Rosanna Raymond and Doris de Pont wearing their New Zealand Order of Merit medals on the runway. Raymond paired her medal with a dress crafted from stencilled barkcloth, blending prestigious formal recognition with traditional material artistry.
