Māori and Pasifika Stars Lead Cast in New Zealand Opera Production of The Pearl Fishers

Auckland is set to host a significant cultural milestone as Māori and Pasifika singers take center stage in New Zealand Opera's upcoming production of Georges Bizet's 1863 masterpiece, The Pearl Fishers. As reported by the NZ Herald on 12 September 2026, the production features Māori and Pasifika performers in three of the opera's four principal roles, highlighting the growing representation of Indigenous and Pacific talent in the classical arts. Māori baritone Phillip Rhodes returns to Aotearoa to perform the role of Zurga, the newly elected leader. Rhodes, who remembers being the only person of color on stage early in his career, noted the presence of more brown faces in the industry is opening doors for the next generation. He reflected on the legacy of the late Sāmoan baritone Iosefa Enari, who served as an early inspiration for him. Joining Rhodes are New Zealand-born Sāmoan soprano Madison Nonoa and Tongan-New Zealand tenor Filipe Manu. Nonoa stars as the romantic lead Léïla, a career-defining role for the Baroque and Classical specialist. Manu makes his debut as Nadir, marking his first performance in New Zealand in approximately a decade. The principal cast is rounded out by New Zealand bass Anthony Robin Schneider as Nourabad. The three leads, who have built successful careers abroad, spoke of the importance of returning home to perform. Manu noted the value of contextualizing their international work for their families in Aotearoa.
