Tiki Taane and Auckland Philharmonia to Collaborate for One-Night-Only Symphonic Event

Aotearoa musical innovator Tiki Taane is set to collaborate with the Auckland Philharmonia for a landmark performance at the Auckland Town Hall on 22 October 2026. According to reporting by Waatea News, the one-night-only event will see the celebrated musician merge his signature sounds—ranging from electronic and reggae to drum and bass and hip hop—with the scale of a full symphony orchestra. The concert aims to reimagine Taane’s most significant hits through new orchestral arrangements, blurring the lines between modern genres and classical music. The performance will feature a range of special guests, including Tali, Big Sima, and Taane’s children, Charlie and Karcia. Audiences can expect to hear symphonic versions of tracks such as 'Tangaroa', 'Summertime', and 'Longtime', the latter of which honours his tenure as frontman for Salmonella Dub. A central highlight of the evening will be a performance of his 2008 hit 'Always on My Mind', which holds the record as the first New Zealand digital single to reach platinum status and spent 55 weeks on the charts. Waatea News reports that this Auckland event follows the success of a similar 2021 collaboration with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. That production, led by conductor and co-arranger Tom Rainey, resulted in a live album and a documentary that garnered over 40 international film awards. Rainey will return to conduct the Auckland Philharmonia, bringing his expertise to a show that incorporates live looping and immersive visual projections. With a career spanning three decades as a performer, producer, and engineer for major acts like Six60 and Shapeshifter, Taane’s latest project showcases the ongoing evolution of Māori artistry on the symphonic stage. The concert follows his recent successful appearance with the orchestra at the Synthony Festival, further cementing the popularity of these cross-genre collaborations in the New Zealand music scene.
