Dr Atakohu Middleton Makes Literary History with Te Reo Māori Short Story Collection Waka Aroha

Auckland University Press has today released a landmark publication in Māori literature, marking what is believed to be the first sole-authored collection of short stories written entirely in te reo Māori. Waka Aroha: He Kohinga Pakipoto, authored by veteran journalist and broadcaster Dr Atakohu Middleton, was officially launched on 10 September 2026 at Waipapa Marae. The collection features 15 original stories that traverse a wide range of contemporary genres, including crime, whānau drama, magical realism, and social commentary. The 176-page book represents a significant shift in Māori-language fiction, moving beyond traditional settings to show that te reo Māori can effectively carry modern narratives such as police procedurals and urban social issues. Dr Middleton, who has three decades of experience in journalism and previously published research on Māori media, wrote the collection to be accessible to a broad audience. According to reports from Waatea News, the stories are designed for readers ranging from intermediate learners and wharekura students to fluent speakers. By utilizing heavy dialogue and accessible language, Middleton aims to provide a resource where readers can enjoy a good story while naturally strengthening their reo. The themes within the book are both personal and political. One story, 'He iti nā te aroha', addresses the realities of child poverty and homelessness by following a whānau living in a vehicle. The titular story, 'Waka Aroha', draws on the life of Middleton’s late father, Ron, and his love for fast cars in the 1960s. Supported by the Mātātuhi Foundation, the book is being hailed as a vital contribution to language revitalisation. It ensures that te reo Māori is used not just for preservation, but as a living medium for creative expression across all facets of modern life in Aotearoa.
