Matariki public holiday brings communities together

The Matariki public holiday — the first uniquely Māori public holiday — continues to draw whānau and communities together for hautapu ceremonies, kai and reflection.

Matariki marks the Māori New Year, signalled by the rise of the Matariki star cluster (Pleiades). It became a public holiday in Aotearoa in 2022. Celebrations are guided by mātauranga Māori and the Matariki Advisory Group, led by Professor Rangi Mātāmua.
