Tauranga Moana Guarding Mauao with Patient Care After Storms

On Thursday, 30 July 2026, iwi of Tauranga Moana shared their commitment to the long-term health and safety of Mt Maunganui Mauao following recent landslides on the maunga. Six slips have been recorded since the weekend, occurring near sites impacted by severe storms and record rainfall in January. While community members and local businesses are eager for tracks to reopen, Mauao trustee Jack Thatcher says the current focus is on allowing the mountain to heal. Speaking to RNZ, Thatcher shared the kōrero of Mauao, who was named for being caught by the morning sun while seeking the ocean. As the guardian of the harbour, Mauao’s mana is central to the region. Thatcher explained that when the mountain is in need, it is the responsibility of the iwi to reciprocate the love and devotion he has shown them. He stated that helping the maunga return to full health cannot be rushed, and the trustees are listening to both geotech experts and their own hearts to determine when the time is right for public return. Supporting this culturally led approach, Tauranga City Council recovery manager Charlie Rahiri noted that while the ultimate goal remains reopening public access, the council is committed to a slow, cautious, and safe remediation. Rahiri emphasized that despite the best laid plans for track repairs, the stability of the mountain depends on the timing of nature. Although some residents have expressed frustration over the lack of a specific opening timeline, work is progressing to restore the jewel of the region. For the kaitiaki of the mountain, the current closure is a period of necessary rest for a site of immense spiritual significance. Trustee Jack Thatcher asked for public patience, noting that while they hope for a possible reopening by the coming summer, they will not compromise the safety of the public or the well-being of the maunga.
