Auckland to Host Historic State of Origin Match at Eden Park in 2027

Auckland is set to become the epicenter of the rugby league world next year following the announcement that Game II of the 2027 State of Origin series will be played at Eden Park. ARLC chairman Peter V’landys described the move as part of a week-long "rugby league festival" in New Zealand’s largest city. Speaking on the significance of the event, sports reporter Bridget Tunnicliffe noted that the series has a massive following among Māori and Pacific communities who have strong ties to the NRL clubs where the stars of the series compete. The festivities are expected to kick off with a Warriors home game at Eden Park on the preceding Sunday. The inclusion of the fixture in Auckland follows recent eligibility changes that have seen prominent players with New Zealand ties participating in the series. According to the reporting, players such as Kalyn Ponga, Addin Fonua-Blake, and Briton Nikora, who featured in the most recent Origin series, remain eligible for selection for the Kiwis at the upcoming World Cup.
