Iwi-led Floating Solar Project to Support Dannevirke Whānau with Energy Hardship

A pioneering renewable energy initiative in Dannevirke is set to alleviate energy hardship for local whānau while providing clean power for district infrastructure. As reported by RNZ, Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua has officially launched a floating solar project at the Dannevirke Wastewater Treatment Plant, featuring 880 solar panels mounted on the surface of a treatment pond. The project is owned and operated by the iwi through its energy company, Tū Mai Rā Energy, in partnership with the Tararua District Council. Under a power purchase agreement, the council buys the electricity produced by the array at a discounted rate to power the treatment facility. Any surplus energy generated by the panels is fed back into the national grid. A significant social outcome of the venture is that profits generated from the electricity sales are earmarked for the community. The initiative will see 50 eligible households receiving contributions toward their power bills to combat energy hardship. Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua Charitable Trust trustee Mavis Mullins described the project as a local solution led by locals for the benefit of locals, noting that the floating design makes clever use of an existing asset. Tararua District Mayor Scott Gilmore suggested the model could serve as a blueprint for other local authorities across New Zealand, noting the potential for hundreds of similar wastewater ponds to be converted into sources of renewable energy. The project has also recently secured funding for battery storage to ensure energy generated during daylight can be utilised after sunset. Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua Charitable Trust chairperson Aaron Kārena said the kaupapa strengthens the iwi connection with the whenua and taiao at Mākirikiri and across the wider rohe. The partnership was underpinned by the principle of mahi tahi, or working together, to sustain the wider community.
