New Zealand Warriors Debut Historic Club Haka Ngā Tamatoa at Go Media Stadium

AUCKLAND — The New Zealand Warriors have marked a major cultural milestone by performing their own club haka for the first time in their 31-year history. On Friday, 7 August 2026, the team introduced Ngā Tamatoa to the world at a sold-out Go Media Stadium shortly before their Round 23 clash against the Penrith Panthers. Titled Ngā Tamatoa, which translates to "The Warriors," the haka was composed by Joe Pihema in association with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. The performance was a central feature of the NRL’s Indigenous Round, serving as a powerful tribute to the club's identity and its connection to the local iwi of Tāmaki Makaurau. The ceremony began with the Warriors following descendants of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei onto the field. The players wore their specially designed Te Ārahi jerseys for the occasion. Led by Erin Clark, the team moved into an arrow formation in the middle of the field. The haka itself was led by co-captain James Fisher-Harris, supported by the team’s Māori and Pacific contingent while the rest of the squad stood in solidarity behind them. Commentator Beaven Dewar described the performance as a "monumental moment" and noted that the haka has now been officially handed over to the club for future generations. The cultural display appeared to ignite the home side, who surged to an 18-0 lead by half-time. The event also carried personal significance for Panthers coach Ivan Cleary, a former Warriors player and coach, whose team faced the challenge as the Warriors sought to keep their finals aspirations alive.
