New Appointments to Waitangi Tribunal Strengthen Governance and Iwi Leadership Capacity

Minister for Māori Development Tama Potaka has confirmed the appointment of two new members to the Waitangi Tribunal, signaling a boost in governance and legal expertise for the permanent commission of inquiry. The appointments of Nick Wells and Rick Witana were announced on Tuesday 28 July 2026, with both men set to serve three-year terms. Minister Potaka highlighted the breadth of experience the new members bring to the table, specifically noting their backgrounds in law, public policy, and Iwi leadership. He stated that these skills will further support the Tribunal’s essential work in navigating Māori-Crown relationships. Mr Wells, an experienced legal practitioner and governance expert, joins the Tribunal following the conclusion of Dr Paul Hamer’s six-year term. Mr Wells currently holds several high-profile roles, serving as the Chair of the Ngāpuhi Asset Holding Company and Kaikohe Berries, alongside his position as Co-Chair of UNICEF Aotearoa. Mr Witana replaces long-serving member Basil Morrison, who retires from the Tribunal after 18 years. Mr Witana is recognized as a leader in Māori governance and public sector engagement, having previously served as the Chair of Te Rūnanga Nui o Te Aupōuri. While the new members begin their tenures, the outgoing members, Dr Hamer and Mr Morrison, will continue to serve on their existing panels until their current inquiries are finalized. Minister Potaka expressed his gratitude to the departing members for their dedicated service to the Aotearoa New Zealand judicial and historical landscape.
