National Party Selects Coral Raukawa to Contest Te Tai Hauāuru Seat

The National Party has officially named Rangitīkei District Councillor Coral Raukawa as its candidate for the Māori electorate seat of Te Tai Hauāuru in the upcoming general election. The announcement, confirmed on 30 June 2026, sees the local leader entering the national political arena with a background in education and local government. Raukawa, who was raised in Marton, brings two decades of experience across the central North Island in the sectors of training, employment, and education. In a statement following her selection, Raukawa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the party. She highlighted her alignment with the party’s current direction, noting positive developments in the economy and safety. Raukawa specifically pointed to progress in educational outcomes, citing that 40 percent of Māori new entrants are now performing at or above the required standard in reading, marking an increase from 25 percent. She attributed these shifts to record investments and a focus on essential services within health and school systems. According to RNZ, National’s decision to stand Raukawa continues the party’s return to Māori electorate contests after a break of nearly 20 years. The party recently broke its hiatus in the 2023 election by standing candidates Harete Hipango in Te Tai Hauāuru and Hinurewa te Hau in Tāmaki Makaurau. The race for the Te Tai Hauāuru electorate is shaping up to be a significant contest. Raukawa will face incumbent Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngārewa-Packer, who secured the seat in 2023 with a majority of 62 percent. Additionally, the Labour Party has announced that Fulbright scholar Te Pūoho Katene will also contest the seat. The inclusion of Raukawa signifies a robust field of candidates for the electorate as the general election approaches.
