Auckland international student numbers surge as recovery continues

Auckland is leading the national recovery of the international education sector, now attracting more than half of all international students choosing to study in New Zealand. According to the latest State of the City report, almost 56,000 international students are currently enrolled in Tāmaki Makaurau, representing approximately 55 percent of the national total. The 2025 data shows a 14 percent increase in regional enrolments as the city continues its post-pandemic growth. While the figures demonstrate Auckland's strong global appeal for talent and investment, the report highlights a significant "conversion gap." Despite the success in attracting students to the region, the city faces challenges in retaining that talent as long-term residents and contributors to the local economy after graduation. The report suggests that more must be done to ensure these advantages translate into permanent skilled workers and business growth. AUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Damon Salesa told 1News that the focus must shift toward providing long-term pathways for these students. Professor Salesa noted that a key challenge is encouraging students to remain in the city to contribute to Aotearoa. He emphasised that this requires delivering genuine opportunity and ensuring that students see a future for themselves and their whānau within the country. Education New Zealand figures confirm that 55,910 international students studied in Auckland in 2025. Nationally, the number of international students reached 92,580 during the same period. Professor Salesa suggested that part of the solution lies in recognising and celebrating the identity of those who arrive, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging that encourages them to become New Zealanders.
