American migrants look to Aotearoa for lifestyle and community

A growing number of Americans are choosing to make Aotearoa New Zealand their permanent home, drawn by the country's reputation for a balanced lifestyle and public safety. According to RNZ, annual figures for those born in the United States being granted citizenship increased by 142 percent between 2016 and 2025. During that same period, the number of Americans granted residency doubled, rising from 1,230 to 2,393 per year. Robert Yang, a game developer who moved from New York to Auckland in 2020, told RNZ that while New Zealand remains a "mysterious land" to many in the US, the attraction is becoming clearer for those looking to escape high-pressure environments. Migration consultant Tara Hulbert, who runs Kiwiamericans, noted that her business has tripled in volume over the past year. While political changes often spark initial interest, Hulbert said the primary drivers are burnout and a search for a better work-life balance. Hulbert, who moved her own family to Wellington in 2013, highlighted that New Zealand’s immigration settings have become more accessible for those with specific skills. This includes Cassidy Donnelly, a software engineer from Texas who is relocating this month. Donnelly used a matrix of requirements to select a new home, noting that the New Zealand education system and public safety were top priorities for her young family. Donnelly’s role is on the "green list," which provides a streamlined path to residency. Her husband Michael, a butcher with 12 years of experience, is also confident about employment prospects. The family expressed excitement about immersing themselves in the local culture and exploring the natural environment. While many newcomers are attracted by the "hustle-free" lifestyle, they also bring valuable skills to local communities and industries, contributing to the diversity of Aotearoa.
