Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa Urges Government to Ban Israeli Settlement Imports

Aotearoa is being urged to take a stronger stand on international law as calls grow for the New Zealand Government to ban imports linked to Israeli settlements in the Occupied West Bank. The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA) argues that the country is currently falling behind international action and is failing to meet its legal responsibilities on the world stage. PSNA spokesperson Rinad Tamimi stated that New Zealand must prevent goods produced in these settlements from entering the domestic market. Tamimi says that continuing to allow these imports helps sustain a system that has been widely condemned. The organisation’s stance follows a landmark 2024 advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, which found Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory to be unlawful and advised that states should not provide aid or assistance in maintaining the situation. The proposed trade measures would specifically target products associated with settlements in the Occupied West Bank rather than a total prohibition on all Israeli goods. Supporters of the move believe trade restrictions are necessary to ensure that New Zealand consumers and businesses do not financially contribute to activities that the United Nations Security Council has previously stated have no legal validity under international law. While New Zealand has historically supported a two-state solution and opposed settlement activity, PSNA argues the Government must now translate these principles into concrete policy. As international scrutiny intensifies, the challenge presented by Tamimi asks whether New Zealand’s commitment to human rights and international law will result in tangible changes to its trade settings. The call places renewed pressure on Wellington to decide how far it will go to ensure it does not economically support settlement activity in Palestinian territory.
