Northland Celebrates Matariki 2026 with Rich Line-up of Cultural and Family Events

Northland is marking the rise of Matariki this midwinter with a diverse series of community events focused on reflection, remembrance, and celebration. As the Pleiades star cluster returns to the eastern horizon, the region is hosting a range of activities that blend mātauranga Māori with contemporary celebrations, the Northern Advocate reports. In Whangārei, the Wairau Māori Art Gallery is opening its doors for a free open day on Friday to coincide with the public holiday. The gallery is currently hosting the exhibition 'Tātai Tuarangi: Star Seeds, Sound Waves and Ceremonies,' curated by Megan Tamati-Quennell and assistant curator Taniora Tamati-Rakete. The day features works by Māori and Pacific artists alongside whānau-friendly activities designed to engage visitors with toi Māori. Culinary traditions are also at the forefront with the 'Puanga on a Plate' food festival. Participating Whangārei eateries, including Local Talent Taverna and Bocky Boo Gelato, are serving specially created dishes until Sunday. The menus highlight regional ingredients, with specific dishes like 'Puanga Rising' drawing inspiration from the individual stars of the Matariki cluster. Further north, cultural storytelling takes center stage. The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway in Kawakawa is hosting a dusk train journey on Saturday along the Taumarere River. This event includes cultural kōrero and waiata led by Ngāti Hine kaumātua, concluding with a traditional hākari feast. For those seeking hands-on experience, Te Waimate Mission is hosting a Pounamu Toki Workshop on Saturday. Led by artists from Aotearoa Bone and Stone, participants can learn Māori carving techniques and tikanga while creating their own pounamu toki pendants. Other regional highlights include the Matariki Twilight Ride at Waitangi Mountain Bike Park and astronomical kōrero at Planetarium North, offering residents multiple ways to connect with the significance of the Māori New Year.
