Health Coalition Aotearoa has launched its Prevention Brief 2026, a strategic plan aimed at improving Māori health outcomes and saving thousands of lives through stronger public health policies.
A significant roadmap for improving health equity has been released this week as health leaders call on political candidates to prioritise the wellbeing of New Zealanders. On Monday, 20 July 2026, Health Coalition Aotearoa (HCA) launched its Prevention Brief 2026, which serves as a blueprint for reducing preventable illnesses and easing the immense pressure on the national healthcare system.
The briefing highlights the urgent need to address tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food, which HCA says account for 350,000 healthy years of life lost annually in Aotearoa. These factors disproportionately affect Māori communities, Pacific people, and children. Currently, Māori life expectancy remains approximately six years lower than that of non-Māori, with one-third of that gap attributed to smoking rates. The coalition argues that by implementing robust preventative measures, thousands of lives can be saved while giving families more quality time together.
HCA interim co-chair Jason Alexander emphasized that prevention is the most cost-effective way to manage the sustainability of the health system. The blueprint proposes several key indigenous-focused and community-led reforms. These include embedding Te Tiriti o Waitangi into the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, securing permanent funding for the Ka Ora, Ka Ako healthy school lunches programme, and tightening tobacco retail licensing to protect future generations.
While Associate Health Ministers Casey Costello and Matt Doocey indicated the government's preference for current regulatory approaches rather than new taxes or purchase age increases, the coalition maintains that putting public health ahead of industry interests is vital for equity. Professor Boyd Swinburn, HCA co-chair, noted that serious action on prevention would significantly reduce the ‘pile-up’ of preventable cases in emergency rooms, ensuring a healthier future for all oranga (wellbeing) across Aotearoa.
