Candidates Prepare for Contest in Aotearoa’s Largest Electorate, Te Tai Tonga

Four candidates vying for the country’s largest electorate, Te Tai Tonga, have set out their priorities for the 2026 election during a live debate on the programme Marae. The electorate is a vast area covering the entire South Island, Stewart Island, the Chatham Islands, Wellington, and parts of the Hutt Valley, spanning more than 150,000 square kilometres. Incumbent MP Tākuta Ferris, who is now standing as an Independent, joined Mananui Ramsden of the Labour Party, Lisa Marie Murch of Te Pāti Māori, and Green Party candidate Dr. Lisa Te Morenga for the discussion moderated by Scotty Morrison. According to 1News, the debate focused on the future of Māori representation and the specific needs of the diverse communities within the southern Māori seat. Dr. Lisa Te Morenga, a professor in Māori health and nutrition, emphasised the need for evidence-based thinking and practical policies to improve lives. Representing Te Pāti Māori, Lisa Marie Murch highlighted her deep roots and existing relationships with iwi across the electorate as a core strength of her candidacy. Meanwhile, Labour’s Mananui Ramsden pledged to be an authentic leader within both Parliament and local communities. Mr. Ferris, who won the seat in 2023 with 12,828 votes, reflected on his efforts to increase political engagement and education among voters. He encouraged constituents to maintain kind conversations with their whānau as the election approaches. The contest follows a 68% voter turnout in the previous election, showing high levels of engagement across the region's Māori population.
