Government and Ngāti Raukawa Partner to Upgrade Te Waihou Blue Spring Infrastructure

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston has announced a $675,000 investment to enhance infrastructure at Te Waihou Blue Spring in South Waikato. Announced on 25 September 2026, the funding will support a collaborative effort between the South Waikato District Council and local iwi Ngāti Raukawa to manage the site’s growing popularity while preserving its natural integrity. Te Waihou Blue Spring is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and unique natural beauty, attracting thousands of domestic and international manuhiri (visitors) annually. Minister Upston highlighted that as visitor numbers increase, it is essential that facilities remain fit for purpose to protect the quality of the experience and the environment itself. The funding, sourced from the International Visitor Levy, aims to reduce congestion and ensure the site remains a sustainable asset for the region. The planned improvements involve several key infrastructure projects designed to streamline access. These include the extension of the main Leslie Road carpark, which serves as the primary access point for the Blue Spring track, and the construction of new public toilet facilities. The investment will also explore technology infrastructure to support future visitor management and the potential establishment of park-and-ride services to mitigate traffic pressure. According to the Beehive announcement, protecting these tourism assets is vital for supporting local employment, income, and investment within the South Waikato community. By partnering with Ngāti Raukawa, the project ensures that the development of this significant site respects local stewardship while maintaining Te Waihou as a premier destination for both locals and travelers to enjoy for generations to come.
