Debbie Ngarewa-Packer Reselected for Te Tai Hauāuru to Champion Transformational Change

Te Pāti Māori has confirmed that co-leader and incumbent MP Debbie Ngarewa-Packer will represent the party for the Te Tai Hauāuru Māori electorate in the upcoming 2026 general election on November 7. The announcement marks a continued commitment to the electorate, which spans from Kāwhia to Porirua and includes the iwi of Taranaki, Whanganui, Horowhenua, Manawatū, and the Kāpiti Coast, along with Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Maniapoto. Ngarewa-Packer, who identifies with Ngāruahine, Ngā Rauru, and Ngāti Ruanui, reflected on her most recent term with humility. According to a report by the Whanganui Chronicle, she highlighted several key community breakthroughs, including the implementation of solar projects on marae and papakāinga. These initiatives are designed to boost sustainability and mana motuhake by addressing energy affordability and sovereignty directly within Māori communities. Beyond environmental and energy projects, Ngarewa-Packer has been a vocal advocate for indigenous rights on the national stage. She has supported opposition to seabed mining off the South Taranaki coast and encouraged public submissions against proposed changes to Te Tiriti. Her platform for 2026 emphasizes restoring a Māori health commissioning agency and entrenching Te Tiriti to ensure Māori maintain uninterrupted kaitiakitanga over their whenua and wai. Looking toward the future, Ngarewa-Packer stated that the party is focused on long-term influence rather than just single election cycles. She noted that while other parties may offer incremental shifts, her focus remains on transformational change. To achieve this, she is encouraging more people to move onto the Māori roll to ensure their voices have a greater impact on New Zealand’s political landscape. She will face Labour’s Te Pūoho Katene and National’s Coral Raukawa in the contest for the seat.
