One of Aotearoa’s longest-serving Māori health organisations, He Waka Tapu, has reached a major milestone, marking 30 years of dedicated service to the community. To commemorate three decades of operation, the Christchurch-based provider has announced the launch of Project Hauora, a new initiative designed to significantly improve healthcare access for whānau across the eastern suburbs of the city. Established in 1996, He Waka Tapu has evolved into a cornerstone of Māori health in the South Island. Over the last 30 years, the organisation has expanded its reach to include a comprehensive suite of services, ranging from primary healthcare and mental health support to addiction services, social programmes, and community outreach. The provider attributes its longevity to a whānau-centred model that prioritises trusted relationships and treats health as a holistic connection between culture, family, and wellbeing. Project Hauora serves as a response to the evolving needs of the East Christchurch community, specifically targeting the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking timely medical care. By strengthening the links between community organisations, health providers, and whānau, the initiative aims to facilitate earlier interventions. He Waka Tapu noted that this approach is particularly vital for Māori and Pacific communities, as well as those facing social or financial challenges, who continue to experience persistent health inequities.
