Green Party Unveils $3 Billion Solar Energy Plan to Support Māori Communities and Lower Bills

On Monday, Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson is set to launch a $3 billion energy policy aimed at returning power generation to community control and easing the cost of living for whānau. Speaking in a sit-down interview with Julian Wilcox on The Hui on 20 July 2026, Davidson outlined a vision for renewable energy that prioritises public good over corporate profit. The proposed policy includes the establishment of Kiwipower, a new Crown entity dedicated to renewable generation. A central pillar of the plan is the provision of zero-interest loans for 90% of New Zealand households to install solar panels. The initiative also seeks to scale up solar infrastructure and batteries on publicly owned facilities, including marae, schools, and recreation centres. Davidson told The Hui that solar installations could begin as early as the next six months under this framework. Davidson highlighted the potential impact on rural and provincial centres, such as Tokoroa, where Māori generations have historically been affected by industrial shutdowns. She noted that returning energy control to local communities would ensure more affordable power bills and support industries that employ Māori whānau. The policy also includes provisions for low-income households to transition from gas to electricity and legalises plug-in solar options for tenants. While the co-leader used strong language to critique the current coalition government’s impact on Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, her announcement focused on a proactive shift toward sustainable energy. Davidson stated that the Green Party aims to interrupt the dominance of major power companies and ensure that energy serves the public, particularly those who are currently struggling with high living costs and rent.
