Labour Launches 2026 Māori Seat Campaign at Wainuiomata Marae with Focus on Mana Motuhake

WAINUIOMATA — The Labour Party officially launched its campaign to reclaim the seven Māori electorates on Sunday, 30 August 2026, during a gathering at Wainuiomata Marae. Speaking to a lively crowd of nearly 100 supporters and volunteers, Māori campaign chair Willie Jackson and party leader Chris Hipkins outlined a strategy focused on the practical needs of whānau, including jobs, health, and housing. According to reporting by The Spinoff, Jackson emphasised that the party is building on its "track record" of delivering on the "dream of mana motuhake." He noted that the party’s current approach prioritises an economic strategy to address the immediate challenges facing Māori, such as the cost of living and healthcare access. This strategy mirrors the one used in 2017 when the party successfully held all Māori seats. Local MP for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti, Cushla Tangaere-Manuel, described the atmosphere at the marae as highly motivational. The event served as a platform for the party to reaffirm its commitment to a "by Māori, for Māori" approach in service delivery. While acknowledging that Te Tiriti remains a core principle, Jackson told supporters that the party’s immediate focus is on ensuring Māori have stable homes and employment opportunities. Regarding health, Chris Hipkins addressed the legacy of the Māori Health Authority, Te Aka Whai Ora. He told media that the party remains absolutely committed to a by Māori, for Māori approach to healthcare delivery, though he suggested future models may evolve to better serve the community. The launch marks the beginning of a concerted "two ticks" effort as the party seeks to connect with Māori voters ahead of the 2026 election.
