Tāiki ē! Grassroots campaign mobilises Māori whānau for Election 2026 enrolment

A nationwide grassroots campaign titled ‘Together for the Vote’ has launched to mobilise Māori communities and rangatahi across Aotearoa ahead of the upcoming general election. ActionStation Director Kassie Hartendorp, of Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Tūwharetoa, is helping lead the movement, warning that Election 2026 will operate under significantly different rules than previous years. The urgency stems from the Electoral Amendment Act 2025, which dictates that enrolment now closes 13 days before election day. Unlike the last two elections, eligible voters will no longer be able to enrol at the polling booth during the voting period. For the 2026 election, anyone wishing to cast a ballot on 7 November must be enrolled by midnight on 25 October. According to Electoral Commission data cited in the report, approximately 440,000 eligible New Zealanders remain unenrolled, including 200,000 people aged between 18 and 24. To address this gap, the campaign has launched ‘Tāiki ē! Your Enrolment Festival’ this week. The initiative focuses on whānau-to-whānau conversations rather than traditional top-down advertising. Organisers are encouraging engagement at marae, sports clubs, and markets to reach those who may not be following political news. Hartendorp says community organisers are responding with high energy, particularly to support groups that face higher barriers to participation, such as Māori, renters, and young people. For Māori enrolling for the first time, the campaign reminds whānau they still have the opportunity to choose between the Māori roll and the general roll. The Electoral Commission is also supporting these efforts by sending out two million reminder emails and establishing face-to-face hubs to assist with the process before the October deadline.
