A current Black Ferns sevens player has opened the doors of a free weekend rugby academy for tamariki wāhine in South Dunedin, hoping to create pathways she didn't have growing up. The academy runs Saturday mornings and is free to attend, with gear and kai provided. More than 60 girls turned up to the first session. "If even one of these girls ends up in a black jersey, the whole thing is worth it," she said. Local businesses have stepped up to sponsor jerseys and transport.
