RNZ Board prioritises national identity and cultural diversity in strategic roadmap through 2030

Radio New Zealand (RNZ) has outlined a clear strategic vision for the next four years, placing the reflection of a changing nation at the heart of its operations through to 2030. In the RNZ Statement of Intent published on 30 June 2026, the public broadcaster reaffirmed its commitment to the Radio New Zealand Act 1995, which mandates the promotion of ethnic, cultural, and artistic diversity for the people of Aotearoa. RNZ Board Chair Dr Jim Mather and Audit and Risk Committee Chair Jane Wrightson signal that while the media landscape faces disruption from artificial intelligence and shifting audience habits, the broadcaster’s core purpose remains unchanged. One of the four high-level strategic outcomes set by the Board is to "Reflect a changing nation," ensuring that the unique cultural identity of New Zealand is central to its content. According to the document, the RNZ Charter acts as the organisation’s "DNA," defining its responsibility to foster national identity while contributing to tolerance and understanding. The broadcaster aims to fulfill information, entertainment, and cultural needs by providing a blend of content that is described as being "distinctly New Zealand." In addition to its cultural role, RNZ will continue to operate as an emergency broadcaster and an information lifeline during times of crisis. The 2026-2030 strategy focuses on winning audience loyalty through innovation and modernisation of its multi-platform distribution model, which includes rnz.co.nz, social media, and partnerships like the Local Democracy Reporting Programme. By modernising its owned channels and building collaborations, RNZ intends to safeguard its ability to serve all New Zealanders and adapt to evolving social and technological shifts.
