Waikato-Tainui and Green MP Hūhana Lyndon Defend Health of Awa Against Legislative Delays

The Waikato River Authority noted that the deferral of Farm Environment Plans pushes back essential steps required to achieve Te Ture Whaimana o Te Awa o Waikato—the vision and strategy for the river’s restoration. For Waikato-Tainui, the health of the awa is not merely a policy matter but a spiritual obligation, as the river is regarded as a tūpuna (ancestor) inextricably linked to their whakapapa and kaitiakitanga. Waikato-Tainui Chair Tukoroirangi Morgan expressed strong opposition to the delay, stating that the intervention prioritises political considerations over the wellbeing of the water. He noted that the move risks undermining specific commitments established through the Waikato River settlement process. Additionally, the Waikato Regional Council expressed disappointment, clarifying that they were not consulted before the Government announced the changes to the collaborative plan.
