Future Hope for Pasifika Rugby as NZ Rugby Keeps Door Open for 2028 Franchise Bid

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has signaled a clear pathway forward for Pacific Island rugby, maintaining that the door remains open for a future Pasifika franchise to re-enter the Super Rugby Pacific competition in 2028. The announcement, made on Wednesday 24 June 2026, follows the difficult decision to not award Moana Pasifika’s current license for the upcoming 2027 season. Moana Pasifika concluded its 2026 operations last month and is currently in liquidation, with reports indicating a debt of just over $8 million. NZR chief financial officer Chris Kinraid explained in Wellington that while four serious bids were presented to rescue the team, the timeframe was too short to establish the committed capital required for a 2027 start. However, Kinraid emphasized that NZR is “completely open” to future bids that demonstrate credible and sustainable capital for the long term. The Kanaloa Consortium, one of the primary bidders, has expressed strong optimism despite the 2027 hiatus. CEO Tracy Atiga stated that the group is fully supportive of the decision to aim for a more sustainable 2028 start. Working alongside the rugby unions of Samoa, Tonga, Niue, and the Cook Islands, the consortium reportedly has financial backing close to $100 million. Atiga noted that the extended timeframe provides an opportunity for strong Pasifika leadership to secure a better position for the wider Pacific Island rugby community. While the news has brought disappointment to players and fans, Tonga Rugby Union chief executive officer Aisea Aholelei highlighted the “bright side” of a potential 2028 return. NZR has committed to supporting current players and staff by covering contracts through to the end of July. With continued backing from stakeholders and the New Zealand government, the focus now shifts to building a resilient foundation for Pasifika rugby on the world stage.
