During the NZ Herald’s Future of New Zealand Debate, political representatives shared aspirations for a country rooted in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the revitalisation of te reo Māori.

Political leaders and influencers gathered on Wednesday for the first of three scheduled events in the NZ Herald’s Future of New Zealand Debate series. Hosted by Ryan Bridge, the forum featured 24 panellists who explored strategies for national prosperity, technological advancement, and social wellbeing ahead of the 2026 election. Te Pāti Māori representative Oriini Kaipara shared a vision for Aotearoa where every citizen has access to safe, affordable housing and children are provided with strong developmental pathways. Central to this vision is the entrenchment of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Kaipara noted that the country’s future success relies on building upon the prophecies and legacies existing within Māori communities, stating that what benefits iwi ultimately benefits all New Zealanders. Addressing climate resilience, Kaipara highlighted the evolving nature of Te Pāti Māori’s adaptation plans. She noted that marae are often the first to open their doors during emergencies and argued for better support for these community hubs, which frequently operate on the front lines of emergency management. Green Party MP Tamatha Paul also shared her aspirations for future generations, envisioning a New Zealand where her mokopuna speak te reo Māori as their first language. Paul emphasised the importance of a government that values the contributions of young people and encourages them to innovate and remain in Aotearoa. She expressed a desire for a future where all mokopuna are raised in an environment that recognises their inherent worth and hard work. The debate also touched on economic growth, with various panellists, including Shane Jones and Nicola Willis, discussing the need for energy security and rewarding effort to ensure the nation’s potential is fully realised.
