Aboriginal Artist Ambrose Killian Designs 2026 Sydney Marathon Medals

Aboriginal Australian artist Ambrose Killian has seen his work showcased on a grand scale at the 2026 Sydney Marathon. In a report by the ICT Newscast on Friday, 18 September 2026, it was revealed that Killian was selected to design part of the official finishers' medal for the prestigious event. The collaboration brought Indigenous artistry to the forefront of one of Australia's largest sporting spectacles. More than 36,000 runners received the medal after completing the arduous 42-kilometre race through the streets of Sydney. The design serves as a lasting tribute to the athletes' endurance and a prominent display of Aboriginal culture. Speaking with ICT, Killian shared the significance of having his heritage represented on such a widely distributed token of achievement. In addition to the celebration of Aboriginal art in sports, the ICT Newscast highlighted major repatriation milestones for Indigenous communities in North America. The Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes successfully welcomed home the remains of three ancestors—Christine Redstone, Peter Howe, and Richard Morgan—who died while attending the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. The repatriation was the result of a dedicated effort by a tribal delegation that began two decades ago. Further north, the work of the Michigan Anishinaabek Cultural Preservation and Repatriation Alliance is being documented in a new film. Directors Adam and Zack Khalil’s documentary, titled “Aanikoobijigan,” explores the connection between current generations and their ancestors. The project is scheduled to air on the PBS series “Independent Lens” next year, continuing the global momentum of Indigenous storytelling and the reclamation of cultural heritage.
